Planning to visit the Summer Capital of the Philippines for a quick break? Do you want to try something new?
Why not try going up on a mountain and enjoy a hot cup of coffee in an overlooking coffee shop in Baguio City? Sounds like an amazing place, right?
While it may sound like something straight out of a fantasy, that place actually exists and its located at the southern outskirts of Baguio.
The place is known as Cafe in the Sky. Cafe in the Sky is a sky-high cafe and bed and breakfast that locals and tourists love to visit for its stunning overlooking view of the clouds and mountains all over the province of Baguio.
At Cafe in the Sky, you can enjoy the unique experience of watching the scenery of clouds slowly move as you sip your cup of coffee.
While Cafe in the Sky offers a unique experience, combined with delicious food and drinks and a stunning view, keep in mind that getting there can be a challenge.
Cafe in the Sky Baguio: A Brief History
Cafe in the Sky is owned by St. Thomas Peak Corporation. The idea for the cafe started as early as 2014 when a group of friends having a chat decided to put up a cafe at the exact spot where they were enjoying their drinks.
Cafe in the Sky rose to fame after the nearby La Presa farm became famous – the farm became a hit when ABS-CBN made it their set for the TV series, Forevermore. The teleserye featured the breathtaking landscapes of the place along with its farm terraces.
This amazing view attracted many tourists. The result, the small village instantly turned into a popular tourist spot.
Heading to Cafe in the Sky: The Challenges
Visiting Cafe in the Sky can be challenging due to political issues. It is seated on Mt. Sto. Tomas in Tuba, Benguet and the territory is supervised and protected by the local government.
Access to this place for tourists can be difficult due to the strict regulations implemented for conserving the environment. Officers are already patrolling to checkpoint going to Cafe in the Sky as early as 4 AM and only locals living in the area are allowed to go in and out of the place.
Next, going to Cafe in the Sky can be expensive. There’s no direct means of transportation going there. From Manila, you can take a bus going to Baguio City at Cubao Station – it’s a 30-minute ride from Baguio Town Proper.
Then, you may rent a taxi from the town proper, or you can take an FX from the checkpoint going to the cafe. Whether you take a taxi or an FX, the rate can be quite expensive. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try to hike from the checkpoint to the cafe.
The challenge? The hike takes about 4.2 kilometers with 1,200 feet of elevation. And if you’re hiking in the morning, the temperature can be another challenge – temperatures can drop to 10°C (50°F). Lastly, the cafe is occasionally closed due to random reasons. Sometimes, the cafe is closed for a period of time due to political issues or for some other reason.
Cafe in the Sky Baguio Experience
Cafe in the Sky has a rustic and charming aesthetic. Generally, it looks like an old lodge made up of concrete and lumber.
The interior is embellished with wooden furniture and indigenous Cordillera art. All in all, the cafe has a quiet and peaceful interior and a welcoming atmosphere.
At the northern side of Cafe in the Sky is a balcony overlooking the panoramic view of Baguio City. From the balcony, you can see a different perspective of the city at a height of about 6,500 feet.
